Festus Business Warning Other Businesses After Fake Movie Prop Money Passed at Store

Festus, Mo. (KFMO) - Richard’s Produce in Festus is warning area residents and business owners after several pieces of fake movie prop money were reportedly used at the store.

According to a statement from the business, employees have recently encountered bills designed as movie props that closely resemble real U.S. currency. However, the bills contain markings such as “Motion Picture Use Only,” “Movie Prop Use,” “Copy,” and “Replica,” indicating they are not legal tender.

Store officials stressed that using prop money to purchase merchandise is not considered a harmless prank or mistake. They say anyone knowingly using fake currency to obtain goods could face theft-related criminal charges.

In response to the incidents, Richard’s Produce has trained employees to closely inspect cash transactions. The business says any attempt to pass prop money will result in the transaction being refused, law enforcement being contacted, vehicle descriptions and license plate numbers being documented, and security footage being preserved.

The store is also encouraging other business owners to check cash carefully, noting that some of the fake bills can appear convincing at a quick glance, especially during busy periods.

Richard’s Produce is asking residents to help spread awareness of the issue to prevent other businesses from becoming victims and reminding customers that movie prop money belongs on a film set, not in a checkout line.
