Flooding Remains One of Missouri’s Deadliest Weather Threats

St. Louis, Mo. (KFMO) - Flood safety is the final focus of Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

Flooding continues to rank among the deadliest weather hazards in Missouri, claiming three lives in 2025 alone.

The National Weather Service strongly urges drivers to never attempt to cross flooded roadways.

Safety experts warn:

  • Six inches of fast-moving water can cause a vehicle to lose control.
  • Floodwaters can rise rapidly and sweep vehicles away.
  • Murky water may conceal road damage, debris, or washouts.
  • Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts closely during heavy rainfall events and have an evacuation plan if they live in flood-prone areas.

Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week serves as an annual reminder that preparation, awareness, and quick action save lives.
