Washington, D.C. (KFMO) - The United States is seeing a sharp increase in flu cases this season, with health officials reporting more than four million infections nationwide so far.
Doctor Benjamin Abella says getting a flu shot remains one of the most important steps people can take to protect themselves and others.
Abella says there are also everyday actions that can help slow the spread of the virus.
Other actions include covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick.He adds the flu strain circulating this season appears to be hitting harder than in recent years, leading to more severe symptoms for some patients.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu has already claimed the lives of about 2,000 people this season, including three children.
