Get Healthy Through Gardening Program Returns to Felix Vallé House in June

Ste. Genevieve, Mo. (KFMO) - A new educational gardening program will give participants the opportunity to learn valuable gardening skills while discovering the physical and mental health benefits of growing their own food.

The "Get Healthy Through Gardening" program begins Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Felix Vallé House State Historic Site in Ste. Genevieve. The eight-week hands-on series is presented by the University of Missouri's MU Extension program and will take place in the backyard of the historic site at 198 Merchant Street.

Throughout the program, participants will learn techniques for creating and maintaining fruit and vegetable gardens while exploring how gardening can contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

The June schedule includes four classes beginning at 5:30 p.m. each Thursday.

The June 4 session, "Preparing to Plant," will focus on seed-starting and transplanting methods designed to reduce plant stress and improve survival rates. Participants will also learn about soil amendments that can help boost seedling growth.

On June 11, the class "Nutrients for Plants and You" will examine the importance of nutritional balance for both people and plants. Instructors will discuss soil health, composting practices, and the role nutrients play in successful gardening.

The June 18 lesson, "Pests and Problems," will teach participants how to identify common garden pests and diseases and provide strategies for prevention and treatment.

The June 25 class, "Food Preparation: Then and Now," will cover food safety practices for harvested fruits and vegetables. Participants will also learn about historic food preservation and preparation methods through a guided tour of an 1840s kitchen at the historic site.

Class size is limited to 15 participants ages 17 and older. Individuals who attend at least six of the program's classes will have the opportunity to take home a free small appliance of their choice during the July 2 session.

Organizers encourage interested participants to register early due to the limited class size. Registration is available through the Missouri State Parks Camping Reservations website.

The Felix Vallé House State Historic Site is located at 198 Merchant Street in Ste. Genevieve. The program combines practical gardening instruction with health education and local history, offering a unique learning experience for area residents.
