Iron Co., Mo. (KFMO) - The Iron County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a new scam involving callers who claim to be working for a government entity.
According to authorities, the scammer will call individuals and attempt to convince them to send money using PayPal. Residents are warned that legitimate government agencies will never request payment or personal information over the phone through PayPal or any other electronic payment service. Officials urge the public to never provide personal information, bank details, or send money in any form to unsolicited callers.
Anyone who receives a call of this nature is advised to hang up immediately and report the incident to law enforcement. To report a suspected scam during regular business hours, residents can contact the Iron County Sheriff’s Office at 573-546-7051, ext. 1, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After hours, reports can be made by calling 573-546-4000.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to share this information with family members, friends, and especially elderly individuals who may be more vulnerable to scam attempts.
