Ironton, Mo. (KFMO) - The Ironton City Pool has temporarily closed after city officials discovered that several lifeguards were not properly certified following their training.
According to a statement released by the city, officials became aware that several surrounding municipalities had encountered problems involving lifeguard certifications. As a result, Ironton conducted a review of its own records and found that some lifeguards had not received proper certification after completing their training course.
City officials emphasized that this issue has affected multiple municipalities and individuals throughout the region and is not unique to Ironton.
At this time, only a small number of lifeguards still have valid certifications from the previous year. Although certified staff members are available, officials say there are not enough certified lifeguards to safely and responsibly operate the pool.
The city says the temporary closure is necessary because the safety of the community remains its highest priority.
Officials also announced that, with assistance from the Cape Girardeau Aquatic Director, affected lifeguards are scheduled to complete the certification process on Wednesday.
The Ironton City Pool is expected to resume normal operating hours on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
City officials apologized for the inconvenience and thanked residents for their patience and understanding while the certification process is completed, reaffirming their commitment to providing a safe environment for everyone using the pool.
