Jefferson Co., Mo. (KFMO) - The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a new phone scam involving a caller falsely claiming to be a sheriff’s detective.
According to a report taken by a deputy, a local woman received a call from someone identifying himself as “Detective Dave Wolf.” The caller claimed the woman had missed jury duty and that a warrant would be issued for her arrest unless she made a payment immediately. The Sheriff’s Office says there is no Detective Dave Wolf employed by the department, and officers do not call citizens to warn them about warrants or request payment of any kind over the phone.
Officials are urging residents to hang up immediately if they receive similar calls and to never provide personal information, credit or debit card numbers, or any type of payment to unsolicited callers. The department encourages the community to spread the word so friends, family members, and neighbors don’t fall victim to the scam.
Anyone who receives such a call can report it to local law enforcement, but above all, authorities say, don’t fall for it.
