Keeping Pets Safe During the Winter Months

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - As temperatures drop across the Parkland, veterinarians and animal welfare groups are reminding residents to take extra precautions to keep pets safe during the winter months.

Cold weather can pose serious risks to animals, especially those left outdoors without proper shelter.

Experts say pets should be brought indoors during extreme cold, and outdoor dogs and cats must have warm, dry shelters that are insulated from wind and moisture. Fresh, unfrozen water should be available at all times, and pet owners are encouraged to check water bowls frequently as they can freeze quickly in sub-freezing temperatures. Short-haired animals, seniors, and very young pets are particularly vulnerable. Keeping walks shorter, wiping paws to remove ice and salt, and avoiding prolonged exposure can help prevent frostbite and hypothermia. Local animal advocates also urge residents to bang on their car hoods before starting their vehicles, as outdoor cats sometimes crawl inside for warmth.

Officials say that with a few simple precautions, pets can stay healthy and comfortable all winter long.
