Local Fire Chiefs Honored for Leadership During July Flood

Pilot Knob, Mo. (KFMO) - Two local fire service leaders were honored Saturday for their actions during the catastrophic flooding that struck the Iron-Reynolds County area during the early morning hours of July 10, 2026.

Reynolds County Fire Protection District Chief Ben Meredith and Pilot Knob Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Jimmie Kitchell received resolutions from Missouri State Representative Tony Harbison of the 144th District recognizing them for Exceptional Leadership Under Pressure.

The resolutions were presented Saturday, during a ceremony, at the Pilot Knob Fire Protection District House One in Pilot Knob.

Harbison says Meredith and Kitchell were well deserving of the recognition.

According to the award citation, Meredith and Kitchell distinguished themselves through exceptional leadership and decisive action during the flooding.

The citation says the two leaders remained calm under extreme conditions, effectively coordinated personnel and resources, and made timely and informed decisions that inspired confidence among responding agencies. Their leadership and judgment helped with the successful management of emergency operations and the preservation of 372 lives, according to the resolution.

The citation also states that their performance reflects great credit upon themselves, their departments and the fire service.

Meredith says he is honored to receive the resolution, but believes the recognition extends well beyond the two men who received the awards.

Meredith says a catastrophic event like the July flooding puts a lot of thoughts through your mind. He says he is thankful for the outcome and, most importantly, that no deaths occurred during the emergency.

Kitchell also says he is humbled to receive the resolution.

Kitchell says the flooding created an extremely difficult situation and required quick decisions and commands from those in leadership positions.

The two fire service leaders have extensive experience in the field. The award information notes that Meredith has served in the fire service for 28 years, while Kitchell has served with the Pilot Knob Fire Protection District for more than 40 years.

The Exceptional Leadership Under Pressure resolutions recognize their efforts during one of the most significant flooding emergencies to affect the region in recent years.
