Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - A newly pre-filed bill for the 2026 legislative session could change how high school sports and activities are overseen in Missouri.
SB 863, filed by Sen. Jason Bean of Holcomb, would create a five-member board appointed by the governor to supervise statewide school activity associations. Supporters say the change is aimed at improving accountability for groups that manage interscholastic sports and programs.
The proposal comes after an investigation by the Missouri Attorney General into MSHSAA regarding allegations of race and sex discrimination in its board selection process.
If approved, the new oversight model would take effect August 28, 2026. Lawmakers return to Jefferson City on January 7 to begin the next session.
