Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Governor Mike Kehoe has announced new measures to support Missourians facing potential food insecurity due to the loss of November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits amid the ongoing federal government shutdown.
Because SNAP is fully funded by the federal government, Missouri cannot issue benefits until federal operations resume. Kehoe said the state is working to help those most affected, especially seniors and food banks. The governor authorized a $10.6 million transfer from the Senior Services Growth and Development Fund to support Area Agencies on Aging, helping provide meals for older adults. In addition, $5 million in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funding will be distributed to Missouri food banks earlier than usual to meet increased needs.
Missourians seeking food assistance, or wishing to volunteer or donate, can visit Feeding Missouri, a coalition of food banks serving all counties in the state.
