Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance Offers Help After Winter Storm

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Following the weekend’s winter storm that impacted much of Missouri, the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance is reminding residents to review their insurance coverage and seek help if they have questions or need assistance with claims. Consumers can contact DCI’s Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390 or visit insurance.mo.gov for more information.

DCI urges Missourians to document any storm-related damage as soon as it is safe, including taking photos, keeping receipts for temporary repairs, and contacting their insurance company promptly. Common winter storm losses may include frozen pipes, roof damage from the weight of snow or ice, power outages, vehicle damage, and food spoilage.

Typical homeowners policies may cover frozen pipes, damage caused by ice or snow, and limited food loss due to power outages, though coverage varies by policy and insurer. Comprehensive auto insurance generally covers ice-related vehicle damage, while coverage for docks, boat lifts, and other waterfront structures depends on how those items are insured. Residents are encouraged to review their policies and speak with their insurance agents to understand their coverage.

DCI also encourages residents to reduce future risks by practicing winter fire safety, protecting plumbing from freezing, maintaining trees and gutters, improving home insulation, and keeping vehicles well maintained with emergency supplies on hand.
