Missouri Drivers Urged to Watch for Deer as Fall Activity Increases

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - As deer become more active this time of year, Missouri drivers are being reminded to stay alert, especially during evening and nighttime hours.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says deer movement increases in the fall due to mating season, hunting, and crop harvesting, which can push deer into unexpected areas.

Last year, there were 2,951 deer-related traffic crashes in Missouri, one every 2.98 hours. Four people were killed and 420 were injured. Nearly a quarter of those crashes occurred in urban areas.

The Highway Patrol says most deer strikes happen between October and December, with November being the peak month.

Drivers are urged to slow down when they see deer and remember that they often travel in groups. Officials also warn that swerving to avoid hitting a deer can result in a more serious crash. Always stay alert and buckle up.
