Missouri House Advances Bill to End Most Vehicle Inspections

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Most routine vehicle inspections in Missouri could soon be eliminated under legislation approved by the Missouri House of Representatives.

Current law requires cars, trucks, and SUVs that are at least ten years old or have more than 150,000 miles to undergo inspections every two years, typically costing about $12. The House Committee Substitute covering several bills would end those inspections for most vehicles, while keeping requirements in place for rebuilt salvaged vehicles and vehicles inspected after crashes at the request of law enforcement.

Supporters say eliminating inspections would reduce costs for drivers and argue that studies show inspections do not significantly improve safety. They also point to modern vehicle technology and onboard diagnostics as reasons inspections are less necessary today. Opponents argue inspections help keep unsafe vehicles off the road and warn that ending the requirement could increase risks for families, drivers, and road workers, including those with the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The bill passed on a mostly party-line vote of 104-43 and now moves to the Missouri Senate for consideration.
