Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Missouri State Representative Elizabeth Fuchs will file new legislation, called Hailey’s Law, aimed at preventing domestic violence tragedies involving firearms.
The law is named for Fuchs’ cousin, 22-year-old Hailey Jennings of Festus, who was killed in November 2025 by her boyfriend before he took his own life. Hailey’s Law would allow family members or household members to petition a court to temporarily remove firearms from someone experiencing a severe mental health crisis and posing a credible risk.
Missouri ranks third in the nation for domestic violence incidents, and firearms remain the leading weapon in such homicides. Hailey’s Law is part of a broader effort to prevent violence while respecting due process.
Additional legislation on firearm safety, domestic violence, and mental health protections is expected in the coming months.
