Missouri to Implement Waitlist for Child Care Assistance Amid Record Demand

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced it will implement a waitlist for Missouri’s Child Care Subsidy Program beginning March 1, 2026, citing record demand and limited funding.

According to DESE’s Office of Childhood, the number of families receiving child care assistance has increased by 19 percent since January 2025. The program currently serves more than 27,000 children statewide. Officials say participation is now outpacing available appropriations from the Missouri General Assembly, prompting the need for a waitlist.

“This is not a decision we take lightly,” said Commissioner of Education Dr. Karla Eslinger. She says the waitlist will allow the state to responsibly manage funding, protect services for families already enrolled, and prioritize those facing the greatest challenges.

What Families Should Know

Beginning March 1, newly applying families will be placed on a waitlist

Families approved before March 1 will not be affected

Families who renew on time will continue receiving assistance without interruption

Applications will be processed in order based on submission date and priority ranking

Families will receive email notifications when their application is placed on the waitlist and when it moves forward for processing. While waiting, applications may be updated through the Child Care Subsidy Parent Portal.

Information for Providers

DESE says the waitlist will not affect families currently receiving assistance who renew on time or those reporting changes to active cases. Providers are encouraged to remind families to submit renewal applications at least 60 days before authorizations expire.

DESE officials say the continued growth in demand highlights the importance of the program, while also underscoring the need to operate within available funding to support Missouri’s most vulnerable children and working families.
