MoDOT Unveils 2050 Long-Range Transportation Plan Shaped by Missouri Residents

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri Department of Transportation is looking decades ahead with a newly updated Long-Range Transportation Plan designed to guide the state’s transportation system through 2050.

Officials say the plan was built with significant input from Missourians, gathered through extensive public outreach efforts. That feedback played a key role in shaping priorities and ensuring the final document reflects the needs and expectations of residents across the state.

The plan establishes a long-term roadmap that considers emerging transportation technologies, changing travel trends, and the evolving demands placed on Missouri’s infrastructure. According to MoDOT, the goal is to create a safer, more reliable, and more efficient system for all users.

While the data confirms that personal vehicle travel remains the dominant mode of transportation statewide, the plan also takes a closer look at other critical systems. It includes a summary of Missouri’s State Freight and Rail Plan, which evaluates both freight movement and passenger rail service. That analysis helps identify both short-term improvements and long-term investment needs.

Officials say updating both plans together allows for a more coordinated approach to transportation planning, ensuring that highways, rail systems, and freight networks work together more effectively as the state grows.
