Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - A new COVID-19 variant nicknamed “razor blade throat” or “Nimbus” is spreading through Missouri, and it’s earning its name with reports of painful sore throats.
The variant, officially known as NB.1.8.1, is being monitored by health officials statewide. While not considered more severe than previous strains, it is causing significant discomfort for many who contract it. The virus infects and damages cells in the throat, leaving raw areas that lead to the intense pain being described by patients.
Experts say the variant is also highly contagious. In a typical indoor setting where an infected person spends several hours around others, as many as six or seven out of ten people could become infected if they have not previously had this strain. Despite its rapid spread, current vaccines continue to provide strong protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death.
Health officials recommend staying up to date on COVID vaccinations and practicing good hygiene to help slow transmission.
