Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Thousands of Missourians are still waiting for insurance claim payments related to severe weather disasters in 2025, as state officials say recovery efforts could continue for years.
The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance says more than 250,000 weather-related insurance claims were filed statewide following severe storms, tornadoes, hail, and other weather events during 2025.
According to the department, insurance companies have paid approximately $2.9 billion in claims so far, with the majority of those payments covering damage to private homes and other property. However, many policyholders are still awaiting settlements.
The Department of Commerce and Insurance reports that more than 4,000 Missouri residents have filed formal complaints regarding the claims process. The complaints involve extended wait times, concerns about insurance adjusters, and estimates that homeowners believe do not adequately cover the cost of repairs.
They say the sheer scale of the damage has created significant challenges for both insurance companies and contractors. As a result, some residents may wait as long as two to three years before their claims are fully resolved.
The department also released updated information regarding the deadly tornado that struck the St. Louis area on May 16, 2025. Approximately 10,000 insurance claims were filed as a result of that storm, with insurers paying out roughly $475 million to date.
Recovery efforts in St. Louis continue to face additional obstacles. State officials say an estimated 70 percent of tornado victims did not have private property insurance, creating greater dependence on government assistance and charitable support. The extensive damage and high demand for contractors and building materials have also slowed rebuilding efforts.
Residents with questions about insurance claims, consumer protections, or the complaint process can find additional information at the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance website or call the department's toll-free consumer hotline at 1-800-726-7390.
