Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Thousands of Missouri workers and community members packed the state Capitol rotunda in Jefferson City Wednesday for the “Stand Up, Fight Back” rally, protesting actions by state lawmakers they say undermine workers’ rights, reproductive freedom, voting access, and protections for LGBTQ+ Missourians.
The rally brought together labor, civil rights, abortion rights, racial justice, rural, and faith-based organizations from across the state. Organizers say the protest was aimed at opposing recent legislative efforts affecting paid sick leave, abortion and health care access, the initiative petition process, and congressional redistricting. Following the speaking program, attendees met with lawmakers to discuss their concerns.
The event was co-sponsored by a broad coalition of groups, including Missouri Jobs With Justice, Planned Parenthood advocacy organizations, SEIU Healthcare, UAW locals, Indivisible chapters, PROMO Missouri, and several regional advocacy organizations. Organizers noted the rally followed similar large-scale protests last year after lawmakers moved to roll back voter-approved policies and redraw congressional maps.
Speakers addressed issues impacting working-class Missourians, including paid sick leave, health care access, minimum wage policies, voting representation, and the impact of state laws on LGBTQ+ students, workers, and families.
