Howell Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Missouri drivers are being urged to stay alert for animals crossing roadways as wildlife movement increases across the region.
From turtles to black bears, many species are on the move this time of year — and that can mean dangerous encounters on the road. In Howell County, a young male black bear was recently struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross a road at night. The driver was not injured and immediately contacted local law enforcement. A Missouri Department of Conservation agent responded to the scene.
Wildlife officials remind drivers to remain cautious, especially in rural and wooded areas where wildlife activity is more common. If you do strike an animal — particularly large wildlife like a bear or deer — you should never approach it, especially if it appears injured. Instead, contact your local conservation agent or law enforcement for help.
With warmer weather and seasonal migrations underway, animal crossings are expected to continue. Staying vigilant behind the wheel can help keep both people and animals safe.
