Missouri State Highway Patrol Shares Fraud Awareness Tips at Farmington Chamber Luncheon

Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - Residents are being reminded to stay alert as scams continue to take many forms.

During Thursday’s Farmington Regional Chamber of Commerce Luncheon, Sergeant Dallas Thompson with the Missouri State Highway Patrol spoke about fraud awareness and the different ways scammers attempt to target victims. Thompson said fraud can happen in person, over the computer, by telephone, or through the mail.

He explained that each type of scam can look different, but there are warning signs people should watch for. Thompson said one of the most important things people can do is pay close attention to who they are communicating with and avoid giving out personal information unless they are sure the person or organization is legitimate.

Thompson also shared advice for those who may already have been targeted. He said if someone believes they have been scammed, they should not panic. Instead, they should save screenshots, messages, or any other evidence if the scam happened by text message or online, and then report the incident to their local law enforcement agency.

The presentation served as a reminder that scammers use a wide range of tactics, and staying cautious can help prevent becoming a victim.
