MoDOT Awards $2.7 Million Contract for Safety Improvements on U.S. Route 67 in Madison County

Madison, Co. (KFMO) - The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has approved a major safety improvement project in Madison County, awarding a $2,744,662 contract to Lappe Cement Finishing, Inc. during its April 8 meeting.

The project will focus on upgrading intersections along U.S. Route 67 at Routes A and C in Cherokee Pass. Plans include removing existing median crossovers and replacing them with J-turn intersections designed to improve traffic safety.

According to transportation officials, the intersections were selected for improvements based on historical crash data, with a focus on reducing the types of collisions that have occurred in these areas.

Two design alternatives are currently under consideration. The first includes modified J-turns, while the second adds offset left-turn lanes at both intersections.

With the J-turn design, drivers will no longer cross high-speed lanes of traffic directly. Instead, motorists will turn right, merge into the left lane, and then make a U-turn in the direction they wish to travel, reducing the risk of severe crashes.

Construction on the project is expected to begin in May 2026, with completion anticipated in early 2027.
