Iron Co., Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri Department of Transportation is seeking public feedback on a proposed pedestrian improvement project along Route M in Iron County.
The project includes plans to construct a shared-use pedestrian path and extend the existing box culvert over Mill Dam Creek. According to MoDOT, the improvements would affect a portion of Shepard Mountain Lake Park in Ironton.
Area Engineer Corbin Carlton says the goal is to improve pedestrian access and safety in the area:
During construction, MoDOT says park access will remain available to the public. However, the east entrance to Shepard Mountain Lake Park along Route M will be temporarily closed to allow for construction of the new pedestrian path. The west entrance will remain open throughout the project.
The project is tentatively scheduled to be let for bids in February 2027. If approved, construction could begin as early as spring 2027 and is expected to last approximately three months.
MoDOT is encouraging the public to provide feedback on the project and its potential impact to the park. Comments must be submitted by Friday, May 1, 2026.
