MoDOT to Apply Seal Coats on Routes MM and NN in Madison County July 29-30

Madison Co., Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will perform driving surface improvements on Route MM and Route NN in Madison County on Wednesday, July 29, and Thursday, July 30, weather permitting.

The projects will take place daily from 6:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

On Route MM, crews will work between Route 72 and County Road 537. On Route NN, work will be completed between Route J and County Road 257.

Drivers traveling through either area should expect short, intermittent lane reductions while crews complete the improvements.

The work involves applying seal coats, a pavement preservation treatment commonly used on lower-volume roadways. During the process, crews spray a layer of hot emulsion oil onto the pavement before covering it with finely crushed rock. The material is then compacted into place, and any excess rock is swept from the roadway.

According to MoDOT, seal coating helps prevent water from penetrating the pavement, improves traction, and can extend the life of a roadway by as much as seven years. The treatment also costs approximately one-third the price of a traditional asphalt overlay, making it a cost-effective way to preserve Missouri's highways.

Work zones will be clearly marked with signs. MoDOT reminds motorists to reduce their speed, remain alert for workers and equipment, and use extra caution while traveling through the construction areas.
