Madison Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Drivers traveling along U.S. Route 67 in Madison County should prepare for traffic changes beginning May 18th as the Missouri Department of Transportation begins a major intersection improvement project at Cherokee Pass.
MoDOT says both northbound and southbound U.S. 67 traffic between Route A and Route C, south of Fredericktown, will be reduced to one lane with a 16-foot width restriction while contractor crews construct a new J-turn configuration.
According to MoDOT, the project will remove the current median crossovers at Routes A and C and replace them with safer intersections designed to improve traffic movement and reduce the risk of crashes.
Missouri Department of Transportation Area Engineer Corbin Carlton says J-turns are designed to improve safety by limiting direct crossing movements on high-speed highways.
The upgraded intersections will include offset left turns and shifted deceleration lanes, allowing tractor trailers and large agricultural equipment to enter the highway more safely with straight-on access.
Weather permitting, construction is scheduled to take place from Monday, May 18th through Friday, December 4th. Crews will work daily from 6:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., but the work zone and traffic restrictions will remain in place 24 hours a day until the project is completed.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down, use caution in the work zone, and allow extra travel time through the Cherokee Pass area.
