MoDOT Warns of Rising Road Sign Vandalism in Region, Including Desoto Area

De Soto, Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is asking for public assistance following a recent increase in vandalism involving roadway and traffic signs across the region, including a troubling pattern of stop signs being intentionally removed or knocked down in the Desoto area along Highway 21 over the past several days.

MoDOT officials say crews have also discovered multiple instances of signs being spray-painted, damaged, or completely removed in recent weeks. Transportation leaders warn that these actions pose immediate safety risks to drivers, pedestrians, and emergency responders.

“Street signs are critical safety tools,” said District Maintenance Engineer Bob Becker. “When stop signs are vandalized or removed, drivers lose essential guidance that prevents serious or even fatal crashes. We’re asking the community to help protect these resources before someone gets hurt.”

Why the Issue Is a Safety Concern

Transportation officials outlined several key risks associated with sign vandalism:

Stop signs are required traffic control devices, and missing signs can lead to dangerous intersection crossings.
Drivers unfamiliar with the area are especially vulnerable when signage is missing or damaged.
Emergency responders rely on accurate signage to reach calls quickly and efficiently.
Damaging or removing traffic control devices is illegal in Missouri.
Individuals responsible for crashes caused by sign removal could face fines, restitution, and additional legal penalties.

Impact on Maintenance Operations

MoDOT says its maintenance crews are actively repairing and replacing damaged signs as quickly as possible. However, each replacement takes time and resources away from other planned maintenance projects across the region. Depending on the type of sign, replacement costs can range from about $50 to several hundred dollars each.

How Residents Can Help

Officials are encouraging the public to report any suspicious activity or damaged roadway signs immediately. Reports can be made through the MoDOT Customer Service Center at 1-888-ASK-MODOT or by using online reporting tools available at MoDOT.

Law enforcement may pursue charges against individuals responsible for vandalism.

MoDOT reminds residents that roadway safety is a shared responsibility, and protecting traffic control devices, especially stop signs, helps ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.
