Ste. Genevieve, Mo. (KFMO) - One person was killed and others were injured in a serious crash Friday morning involving a school bus, a semitruck, and two other vehicles in Ste. Genevieve.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened before 7:30 a.m. on Highway A, just east of Interstate 55. Troopers say a westbound semitruck stopped to allow a vehicle ahead of it to turn when it was rear-ended by a car. A second vehicle then rear-ended that car, causing one of the vehicles to cross into the eastbound lane and strike a school bus head-on.
The driver of the car involved in the head-on collision was pronounced dead at the scene.
The bus was a special education bus for Ste. Genevieve Elementary School, according to a spokesperson for the Ste. Genevieve County R-II School District. MSHP reports two students on the bus were taken to the hospital for evaluation. The bus driver and two other students were not injured.
In a statement posted to social media Friday morning, the school district said emergency responders were on scene and families of the students involved were contacted.
The district also announced it would release students early at noon Friday due to what it described as an “unexpected, tragic loss of a staff member” at Bloomsdale Elementary School. Counseling staff will be available Friday and Monday morning to support students and staff. Officials have not confirmed whether the reported death is related to the crash.
Highway Patrol troopers continue to investigate the crash.
