Jefferson Co., Mo. (KFMO) - The Pevely and Herculaneum Police Departments have launched Operation Brakepoint, a joint safety effort aimed at reducing crashes and promoting safe driving along Interstate 55 in Jefferson County.
The initiative coincides with the Missouri Department of Transportation’s $246 million project to widen and improve I-55 from north of Pevely to Highway 67 south of Festus. Operation Brakepoint began earlier this month as a proactive enforcement campaign. Officers are increasing visibility through high-profile patrols, strategic enforcement, and deterrence-based tactics such as keeping emergency lights active to alert drivers entering the construction zone.
Funded through Missouri Highway Safety Grants, the program allows for additional patrols focused on hazardous driving behaviors without impacting city budgets. The initiative is open-ended and will continue throughout the construction project, which began in January 2024 and is scheduled for completion in December 2026. KCI Construction Co., the project’s contractor, is also participating by installing digital speed monitors to help drivers stay aware of their speed through the work zone.
The overall goal of Operation Brakepoint is to improve safety and reduce accidents along the busy stretch of interstate.
