Perry Co., Mo. (KFMO) - The Perry County Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to use caution when uploading personal photos or sensitive information to artificial intelligence applications, filters, or online tools.
The warning comes amid a growing trend of AI-generated memes and images being shared on Facebook and other social media platforms. Officials say while these tools may appear harmless, using AI services such as image generators or chat-based programs can present privacy and security risks.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, once a photo or personal information is uploaded, individuals often lose control over how that content is stored, shared, or used. Images may contain sensitive details such as facial features, locations, uniforms, badges, credentials, or background information that could compromise personal safety. Authorities say uploading personal images or information may increase the risk of identity misuse or impersonation, facial recognition matching, image alteration or manipulation, and long-term data retention beyond a user’s control. Officials also note that AI tools do not focus only on the main subject of a photo or document. Background details such as reflections, employee badges, paperwork, or other visible information may also be captured and processed.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to protect their privacy by avoiding uploading personal photos to AI platforms, not sharing images that show uniforms, badges, credentials, or personal documents, and using avatars or non-identifying images when possible. Officials also stress not to upload dates of birth, full names, Social Security numbers, addresses, or other sensitive personal information.
The Perry County Sheriff’s Office says personal privacy and safety remain important both online and offline, and urges the public to stay informed and cautious when using emerging technologies.
