Perryville Police Warn Businesses About Fake “Motion Picture Money” $20 Bills

Perryville, Mo. (KFMO) - The Perryville Police Department says officers recently received a report involving the attempted use of counterfeit $20 bills marked for “Motion Picture Purposes.” Officials say the fake bills can appear legitimate at a quick glance, making them difficult to spot during busy transactions.

Police say this type of novelty currency is easy to purchase and is sometimes used in scams targeting local businesses. Authorities are encouraging business owners and employees to carefully inspect all bills before completing transactions, especially during high-traffic times or near closing.

According to police, several warning signs may indicate counterfeit money, including wording such as “Motion Picture Purposes,” unusual paper texture, missing or incorrect security features, or customers attempting to rush or distract employees during a purchase.

The department advises anyone who suspects someone is attempting to pass fake money to avoid putting themselves in danger. If possible, businesses should retain the bill, gather suspect or vehicle information, and immediately contact law enforcement.

Police say taking a few extra seconds to inspect currency can help prevent financial losses for local businesses.
