Potosi R-3, Great Mines Health Center Partner to Offer School-Based Counseling

Potosi, Mo. (KFMO) - In response to growing mental health and trauma-related challenges facing students, families, and educators, the Potosi R-3 School District has announced a new partnership with Great Mines Health Center to provide school-based counseling services during the school day.

Through the partnership, licensed professional mental health counselors from Great Mines Health Center will be available on school campuses, allowing students to receive counseling services without leaving school. Services will be offered to students in grades K through 12, as well as district staff, and counseling sessions will not negatively affect student attendance.

School officials say the initiative comes as schools nationwide, including those in the Parkland region, are seeing increased needs related to stress, anxiety, trauma, grief, and other emotional challenges. District leaders emphasize that mental wellness is closely connected to academic success, attendance, behavior, and overall quality of life.

Providing counseling in a familiar and trusted school setting also helps reduce the stigma often associated with mental health care. By normalizing access to these services, students and staff can view mental health support as a routine and healthy part of overall wellness.

The program removes common barriers many families face when seeking care. Parents will not need to take time off work or arrange transportation for outside appointments, as services will be available during the school day. District officials say families can feel confident knowing their children are receiving professional support in a safe and supportive environment.

In addition to supporting students, the partnership offers mental health resources for school staff, helping educators manage stress and maintain their own well-being. District leaders say a healthier school climate benefits students, staff, families, and the broader community. Additional benefits include early identification of concerns, improved academic focus and behavior, reduced absenteeism, and stronger school-family connections.

“This partnership with Great Mines Health Center is an exciting and much-needed step forward for our district,” said Superintendent Bryce Wilson. “We know that many of our students and staff are facing increased mental health challenges, and having these services available right here at school will make a tremendous difference. This collaboration will strengthen our students, support our staff, and positively impact our entire community.”

Parents or guardians interested in their child receiving counseling services during the school day are encouraged to contact the school building their child attends for more information. Great Mines Health Center and the Potosi R-3 School District say they share a commitment to supporting the whole child and ensuring access to the mental health resources needed for academic, emotional, and social success.
