Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - Thunderstorms are likely across the Parkland Tuesday afternoon and evening, and some of those storms could become severe.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service say the region is under a Slight Risk for severe weather as a system moves along a front across Missouri and Illinois. Storms are expected to develop during the afternoon across parts of northeast Missouri or west-central Illinois before moving southeast through the evening hours.
Meteorologists say all severe weather hazards will be possible with the strongest storms. That includes very large hail, damaging winds, and the potential for a few tornadoes. Heavy rainfall is also possible, especially across northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois. That rain could lead to quick rises on creeks and streams and may cause minor flooding in some areas.
The most likely time for severe weather locally will be during the late afternoon and early evening. However, there is still some uncertainty about where storms will first develop. Forecasters say the development area could change depending on the exact position of the front Tuesday afternoon.
Most storms are expected to weaken as they move southeast across the region later in the evening, although severe weather could linger longer if atmospheric conditions change.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware Tuesday afternoon and evening and monitor the latest forecasts and warnings.
