Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - More than 500 children were paired with police officers and other first responders Tuesday as part of St. Francois County’s annual Shop with a Cop program, now recognized as one of the largest events of its kind in the country.
Dozens of first responders gathered at the Walmart in Farmington, helping children shop for holiday gifts while building positive relationships with families in need. Lora Henson, president of the St. Francois County Shop with a Cop program, says this year marks the 30th anniversary of the local effort.
Henson says the program is designed to show children a different side of law enforcement while also providing meaningful holiday assistance to families.
Children are selected for the program by school counselors, who identify students that may need extra help during the Christmas season. Each child receives $100 to spend on gifts, and officers frequently add their own money when items go over budget. Many children choose to purchase gifts for family members rather than for themselves, adding to the spirit of the event.
Henson mentions the program has had a lasting impact over the years, with some past participants later choosing careers in law enforcement. The Shop with a Cop event is made possible through donations from local businesses and community supporters.
