St. Louis, Mo. (KFMO) - A major sinkhole under Interstate 44 in St. Louis is continuing to cause significant traffic disruptions.
The Missouri Department of Transportation, or MoDOT, says the sinkhole developed beneath North Broadway and has exposed bridge footings on the I-44 bridge over Biddle and North Broadway. Officials say multiple interstate closures remain in place, including I-44 westbound and I-70 eastbound at Tucker Boulevard and the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge, along with additional closures affecting I-55, I-64 ramps, and portions of I-70 express lanes.
City officials, including St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer, say crews have been actively working the scene since the sinkhole was discovered Friday night.
MoDOT says crews will continue evaluating the structure and surrounding roadways, and closures are expected to remain in place through at least this week. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has also sent geologists from the Missouri Geological Survey to assist in assessing the sinkhole.
Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area.
