St. Louis, Mo. (KFMO) - The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has released new information about its investigation into the death of a child whose remains were recovered Wednesday in Stookey Township, Illinois, while also announcing an Internal Affairs investigation into its handling of the original missing child case.
Authorities say the remains have not yet been positively identified. The St. Clair County Coroner's Office is conducting forensic examinations to determine the child's identity and official cause of death. Investigators believe the child is connected to a parental kidnapping investigation that began in 2024.
The department says the investigation has now been reassigned to its Homicide Division, with detectives continuing to work alongside local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to determine exactly what happened.
Mitch McCoy, Director of Public Affairs and Information for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, explains how crews reached the location where the child's remains were discovered.
According to the timeline released Thursday:
The department acknowledged concerns raised by the child's mother regarding the handling of the investigation and announced an Internal Affairs review of the Juvenile Division's response in 2024.
Officials say the review will examine whether department policies were properly followed and determine whether any corrective actions are necessary.
In a statement, the department said protecting children is among its highest priorities and pledged transparency throughout the investigation.
The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Division at (314) 444-5371.
