Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - As the colder temperatures continue in the Parkland, families are being reminded to use caution when heating their homes.
The National Fire Protection Association says space heaters account for nearly one-third of home heating fires and about 80 percent of home heating fire deaths each year. The NFPA adds that heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths, with nearly half of those fires occurring during December, January, and February.
Many fires are caused by common mistakes, including placing flammable items too close to heaters or fireplaces. Safety officials recommend keeping anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, never using ovens to heat homes, and turning portable heaters off when leaving a room or going to bed.
Families are also urged to plug space heaters directly into wall outlets, have heating systems inspected annually, and test smoke alarms every month to help prevent deadly fires.
