St. Louis Sinkhole Repairs Force Extended Closure of Interstate 44 in Downtown Area

St. Louis, Mo. (KFMO) - Crews in downtown St. Louis are continuing intensive repairs on a large sinkhole that has forced the closure of a major stretch of Interstate 44, with no clear timeline yet for reopening the roadway.

City officials say the sinkhole formed at Broadway and Biddle following multiple water main breaks that weakened the ground beneath the surface. The situation escalated over the weekend when crews were still working to shut off the remaining water flow from a broken pipe, which further contributed to erosion in the area.

By Monday, repair crews were actively excavating the site, digging the hole wider and deeper in an effort to reach and stabilize the underlying infrastructure. Officials reported that as of Monday afternoon, the sinkhole measured at least 30 feet deep and approximately 40 feet wide.

The closure of Interstate 44 has created significant traffic impacts across downtown St. Louis, with commuters expected to face delays and detours throughout the week. Transportation officials have not provided a timeline for reopening the interstate, citing the complexity and ongoing nature of the repairs.

City leaders are continuing to urge the public to avoid the area for safety reasons as heavy equipment and utility crews work to stabilize the ground and restore damaged infrastructure.
