St. Francois Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Firefighters from the Wolf Creek Fire Department and several surrounding agencies responded to a structure fire Friday afternoon on Highway AA.
The call came in just before 2 p.m., with crews arriving to find fire venting from a rear sunroom on the first floor of the home, with flames extending into the second floor. Initial attempts to check the residence were limited due to heavy fire conditions.
Fire crews quickly began an exterior attack, knocking down the bulk of the fire in the sunroom area before transitioning to an interior attack. Additional resources were requested as fire conditions, limited daytime staffing, and the size of the structure made the incident more complex.
Once inside, crews encountered heavy heat and fire on both the first and second floors. Firefighters conducted a primary and secondary search of the residence, confirming that no occupants were inside the home.
Due to the age of the structure and its balloon-frame construction, fire spread through wall cavities into the upper floors and attic space. Crews worked for several hours to gain access to these hidden areas, extinguish remaining fire, and complete extensive overhaul operations. Firefighters were rotated in and out of the building due to demanding conditions.
Water supply operations were established to support sustained firefighting efforts, while additional crews assisted with fire attack and containment. The fire was brought under control after approximately three hours on scene.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not been released.
