Washington County Launches Text-to-911 and Begins NG911 Upgrades

Washington Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Washington County Central Dispatch has officially launched Text-to-911 services, allowing residents to reach emergency help by text message if they are unable to call or if speaking could put them in danger.

Officials say to send a text, simply enter “911” in the recipient field, provide your location, and briefly describe the emergency. Dispatchers will then respond and coordinate assistance. The Washington County Central Dispatch reminds the public to still call when possible, and text only if calling is not an option. The system has already been fully tested across all major carriers, so residents are asked not to send test messages.

Along with the new texting feature, the county has begun Phase 1 of Next Generation 9-1-1 upgrades, which aim to improve call routing, strengthen network reliability, and enhance location accuracy during emergencies.

The project was funded in part through grants awarded by the Missouri 911 Service Board.
