Winter Storm Warning Issued for Parkland Counties; Dangerous Cold to Follow

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from midnight Friday night through 6 p.m. Sunday for St. Francois, Iron, Jefferson, Madison, Ste. Genevieve, and Washington Counties.

Heavy snow is expected across the warned area, with total snowfall accumulations between 6 and 14 inches north to south. Locally higher amounts are possible. The combination of heavy snow, strong winds, and bitter cold will make this a dangerous situation. Travel is not advised, especially during periods of heavier snowfall when roads may quickly become snow-covered and icy, and visibility may be significantly reduced.

Residents are urged to prepare now by completing travel before conditions deteriorate, stocking up on essential supplies, and checking on elderly neighbors and those with limited mobility. Motorists who must travel should carry a winter survival kit, including blankets, food, water, and a charged phone. If you become stranded, stay with your vehicle and wait for help.

In addition to the snow, dangerously cold temperatures will move into the region. Lows Thursday night will drop into the lower teens, with highs Friday only reaching the upper teens. Friday night lows will fall into the single digits. Saturday’s high will be in the lower teens, with overnight lows in the mid single digits. By Sunday, highs will be in the mid teens, with lows ranging from zero to five degrees below zero.

Wind chill values will make conditions even more hazardous, running 5 to 10 degrees colder than actual air temperatures. Prolonged exposure to the cold can lead to frostbite or hypothermia in a short period of time. Residents should limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and ensure pets are brought indoors or have adequate shelter.
