Free National Workshop Aims to Boost Heat Safety for Outdoor Events

St. Louis, Mo. (KFMO) - Communities and event organizers are getting a chance to prepare for rising temperatures this summer.

The National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) is hosting a free, virtual “Heat Season Warm-Up Workshop” on May 6-7, 2026. Each session will run from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The workshop is designed to help improve heat safety for athletes, spectators, and workers at outdoor events such as sporting events, road races, concerts, and parades.

Topics will include strategies for heat preparedness, tools and resources for event organizers and emergency managers, and lessons learned from communities that have dealt with extreme heat during major events.

Participants will also take part in scenario-based exercises to develop plans for managing heat risks in their own communities.

NIHHIS is an interagency program housed within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Program Office, under the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. The workshop is being hosted in partnership with Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability.
