Farmington Crossings Development to Begin Blasting Operations This Week

Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - Construction activity at the future Farmington Crossings development is entering a new phase as blasting operations are scheduled to begin later this week.

The planned 316,064-square-foot open-air retail development is located at the intersection of Highway 67 and Woodlawn Drive in Farmington. Site preparation and land development work are now underway, including controlled blasting operations that will be performed by the developer’s excavation contractor.

According to city officials, blasting is used during large-scale construction projects to break and loosen rock and other hard materials that cannot be removed with standard excavation equipment. The process helps prepare land for roads, utilities, foundations, drainage systems, and grading.

The contractor anticipates blasting operations will begin Wednesday, May 13, 2026, and continue periodically throughout the duration of the project. On days when blasting takes place, one to two blasts are expected between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Officials say each blasting event will follow a strict notification procedure. Five minutes before a blast, three short air horn signals will sound to alert those in the immediate area. One minute before detonation, another three short horn blasts will sound. Following the blast, crews will inspect the area to confirm all materials detonated properly before sounding one long air horn signal indicating the area is clear.

Residents and businesses near the development site may hear and feel the blasts. However, contractors are required to conduct all blasting operations according to Missouri regulations designed to prevent damage to nearby structures, including plaster and drywall inside homes.

Residents living closest to the project have also received door hangers from the contractor explaining what to expect during the blasting phase of construction.
