Farmington sweeps SB-VB Doubleheader Broadcast in Home Opener Wins

(Farmington, MO) A busy Tuesday in Farmington saw the Knights on both the softball and volleyball side win their home openers. The Softball Knights topped the Festus Tigers 10-5 but it was the Tigers who jumped to an early lead in the 3rd inning with a 2-run home run by Riley Moore.

The Tigers added a 3rd run in the inning with an RBI double from Livi Kearns. Farmington plated a run in the bottom of the third before Festus added on in the top of the 4th.
However the 3-run lead wouldn’t last long as Jayden Tucker stood in with no outs in the bottom of the 4th inning with the bases loaded. She lifted a ball to right field for, what should have been, a routine fly out, but the ball wasn’t caught.

Farmington had momentum the rest of the game and Elly Robbins would find her way in the circle allowing just one more run over the next 3 innings to get the win.

Farmington’s first year head coach, Allison Pingel, says there may have been a factor for the rough start early on for her Knights.

The Knights are 2-1 on the season and face North County on Thursday in a Broadcast game on KFMO. Pregame starts at 4, first pitch at 4:30. The Festus Tigers fall to 1-3.

For the Volleyball Knights, their straight set win over Cape Notre Dame, 26-24, 25-16, 25-23, looked like it was going to be the opposite result at the start of the first set. The Bulldogs opened things up to a 6-2, then 8-4 lead before Farmington found its footing and began to swing back.

Set 1 featured 9 total ties and 8 lead changes. Farmington closed out the set on a 10-3 run to get to a much needed set break and a reset for both teams.

The second set was all Knights after a 5-5 tie. The only lead change came at 6-5 when Farmington claimed the lead in the set. The Bulldogs fought back though using a 7-3 run of their own to tie the set at 12 all. From there Farmington Junior, Zoey Gerwitz took over the offense for the Knights to lead her club to a set 2 winner.

Gerwitz would pace the Farmington attackers, unofficially statted with 11 total. Knights head coach, Haley Baker, says Gerwitz has improved a lot since last season.

The third set featured 7 ties and a pair of lead changes but Farmington would hold on despite being outscored at the close of the set 7-6.

The Knights improve to 2-4 and travel to Festus on Thursday, while Cape Notre Dame begins their season with the loss. They are at Potosi tomorrow.
