Cardinals Sweep Guardians Beginning Road Trip

Cleveland, Oh. (KFMO) – The St. Louis Cardinals swept the Cleveland Guardians over the weekend to start a three city road trip.

The series started Friday night with a near perfect performance by pitcher Sonny Gray who pitched a one-hit shutout with just 89 pitches. He struck out 11 Cleveland hitters in the win. Pedro Pages and Alec Burleson each homered, and Nolan Arenado brought in a pair of runners on two hits. The Cardinals took the series opener 5-0

On Saturday the Cards scored first on Brendan Donovan’s solo homer but the Guardians answered with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Burleson continued his success driving in two in the fifth, then Nolan Gorman drove in Lars Nootbaar with a single. Victor Scott II’s sixth inning double brought home Gorman and Arenado to tie the game. Donovan picked up his second RBI of the win with a sac-fly to give the Cardinals the lead. Willson Contreras homered in the ninth to cap off the 9-6 win.

Matthew Liberatore picked up his sixth win of the season on Sunday after six shutout innings allowing just three hits. Mason Winn, Arenado, and Scott II each collected two hits. Gorman began the scoring with a first inning three-run homer. Scott II homered and collected two RBI in the 7-0 victory.

St. Louis (47-38) begin a series in Pittsburgh on Monday at 4:45p.m. on B104.3.
